“Crossing the Bar” By Alfred Tennyson Review

Here we go again with another boring prom which didn’t work for me.

The plot was very boring here and very uninteresting. It was in a way a huge torture reading this poem.

The writing style here was pretty weak it might be just me who is very picky about what I liked and what I don’t like. But in my opinion it was pretty uninteresting.

I Give This Poem 1 / 5

  1. I agree with you that this is not a poem that one reads for leisure or pleasure, however there may come a time in your life where its words perfectly reflect the situation and the feelings that you are experiencing; as was the case for me.

I remember being shown a book of Tennyson’s poems by my father in my early teens. This book did not originally belong to him, but had been passed down to him.
I cannot recollect when this book was published, but you knew it was far older than him, as each printed page was a slight different size to one another – a consequence of each page being hand-cut rather than by machine which is the case today.

My father passed away earlier this month, and I recalled this book of poems and subsequently found this particular poem.

I just about managed to hold it together to read out this poem at the crematorium in front of around fifty family and friends. A mere five minutes later, I pressed the button to move his coffin into furnace chamber.

These words were rather comforting for me in this particularly difficult situation.

Perhaps you will remember this story, if you ever find yourself in this particular situation in the future.
