“The Terrible Old Man” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about Three robbers plan to break into the house of a mysterious old man to steal his gold. They soon find out that the old man is not as defenseless as they thought.

The plot of this story isn’t so unique now on days because it is about adult men planning to rob an old man. We have seen probably ever version of this plot in the movies during the last 10 years which makes this plot a little bit overused. But the fact that this short story was written back in 1920 doesn’t make it better since im dead tired of this plot. (Thanks Hollywood for destroying this plot for me).

The writing style went down the hill from the previous short story from HP Lovecraft we have talked about. It was for the most part okay but there were some parts which were a little bit at the bottom of the hill kindly said.

The characters here were surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting the characters in this short story to be so good as they were.

This story was creepy at some parts, and for the most part this story was enjoyable with very few boring moments. And to make a quick comment about these creepy moments in this short story I need to say that I truly loved these creepy moments because they sent a chill down my spine.

But to be fully honest here this short story was for me at least way too descriptive. The amount of details and other things we were given in this short story annoyed me to say at least. I hate when short stories and books have way too many details in them. Come on authors give us some free space to wonder ourself.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Cats of Ulthar” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about how the town of Ulthar made the decision to forbid anyone from killing cats.

For the most part this one is fun little short story which most people will enjoy.

The plot is fine here, but the whole potential wasn’t used here. And the plot gives a couple of question-marks because the narrator talks about that in the time before the law became a thing, there have been an accident or an event where the an old cotter and his wife who trapped and killed their neighbors’ cats.

The writing style here was pretty okay, it wasn’t the best but after reading a couple of short stories I can tell that the writing style could be much better than it actually was.

This short story supposes to be a horror story but to be honest it feels more like a twisted and dark fairytale than a horror story. It can be just me, but if you have read this short story let me know what was your thoughts about it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Nyarlathotep” By HP Lovecraft Review

This poem is about  a bleak view of human civilization in decline. And the whole poem explores the mixed sensations of desperation and defiance in a dying society.

Well I don’t know how to write this review because I like this poem but also at the same time didn’t. And I don’t know what happening to me on this one, because whenever I finish reading something I just know if I liked it or not.

The writing style in this one was amazing, it was probably the best part about this poem. It felt like HP Lovecraft was in my head and just knew what words to use to get me involved in the story of this poem.

However the plot itself wasn’t so good. I don’t know but the plot didn’t go so well with me on this one. Of course it was good but I felt like it could be much better.

It is important to mention that this poem for whatever reason gave me a Edgar Allan Poe vibe while reading it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Picture in the House” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about A young man takes shelter from a storm in an old house inhabited by a strange old man.

So this is the second short story by HP Lovecraft which gave me Edgar Allan Poe vibes for whatever reason. But I really don’t mind that.

The writing style here was pretty decent, but as someone who have read a few short stories by HP Lovecraft I know that he was able to do better than this.

The plot in this one was really Lovecraftian as you might know. But still for whatever reason it didn’t go well with me.

It was very short so I didn’t need to suffer throughout reading this one, which is really good.

The ending in this one, was one of the worst ending I’ve read so far. Which really speaks for itself doesn’t it?

I feel like the whole premise of this story wasn’t really fulfilled which really annoys me.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Some Words With a Mummy” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

Some Words with a Mummy is a satirical short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Doctor Ponnonner invites the narrator to his home to take part in a mummy unwrapping.

The idea behind this short story was pretty interesting but I feel like it wasn’t used in the way as it could. It sort of had the potential to be better but in my opinion it wasn’t used.

The writing style here wasn’t the best. For the most part the writing style here was pretty okay but Edgar Allan Poe was able to do much better than this one.

And I gotta be honest here with you this short story was packed with Edgar Allan Poe’s dry wit. Which didn’t go so well with me.

I also had hard time connecting with the story which leads to a low rating in my life and my adventure with books, short stories, poems, movies and series.

This story was funny, so it needs to get points for that. There were a very hilarious moment in this story when the modern people of that era which is 19th century, could only find one superiority when compared to the ancient Egyptians which of course is cough drops. I had a good laugh when I read this and I love to have a good laugh while reading something. However this moment has truth to it. Because ancient people were very smart and more advanced than what we give them credit for.

And gotta say that this short story was creative which i like when it happens. So again extra points to this short story.

I give this poem 1 / 5

“The Literary Life of Thingum Bob, Esq.” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

This short story is about one Thingum Bob, who is a son of a brilliant and successful businessman.

This short story is a little wordy story, which i don’t mind but i’m not a huge fan of.

The writing style was pretty okay but Edgar Allan Poe was able to much better work than what he did here.

I had again hard time connecting with the story. So again a low rating is in order.

This short story needs to get points for having some funny moments but there weren’t a lot of them.

The story in this short story was far from great. Its a bit of a disappointment if you are an Edgar Allan Poe like me.

I give this poem 1 / 5

“The Angel of the Odd” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

The story follows an unnamed narrator who reads a story about a man who died after accidentally sucking a needle down his throat. He rages at the gullibility of humanity for believing a hoax.

So the whole story in this short story was so absurd that there were times were it might laugh and there were times when it made me think why I was reading it. Which isn’t a good combination if you ask me.

However it needs to get points for being creative and sort of different from his other short stories. For me at least it sort of stands out from the rest not because it is good but because it was so strange even when it comes to Edgar Allan Poe.

I had really hard time connecting with the story which as you might know leads me to give it a low rating.

However  it was entertaining and made me laugh at times. And I had sort of fun time reading it but it was far from the best work by Edgar Allan Poe. However at times it was way too ridiculous at least for me.

The writing style was okay, it was not the worst but neither it was the best. Its like on the line between good and bad.

I don’t know why but every time Edgar Allan Poe tries to be humanistic in his stories it doesn’t go well with me. It might be because I think of Edgar Allan Poe as the strange and odd guy who writes bad ass stories and poems and not as the jokester.

This short stories wasn’t sort of my idea of horror which is probably another reason why I give it so low rating.

It was also hard to read at times because the voice of the angel in this short story was written in a weird way. Which was sort of a in drunken style which made me very confused.

I give this story 1 / 5

“The Balloon Hoax” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

It is about detailed European Monck Mason’s trip across the Atlantic Ocean in only three days in a gas balloon. It was later revealed as a hoax and the story was retracted two days later.

So another short story from Edgar Allan Poe which didn’t go well with me. I had hard time connecting with the story which again leads to a low rating from me.

I also need to mention that this story was boring and it wasn’t a lots of action in it.

The writing style was bad, probably one of the worst I’ve seen Edgar Allan Poe do in his short stories and poems.

After reading this short story I began to think that Edgar Allan Poe had a fascination with hot air balloons.  Because it was too much talk about them in this story.

One of the things which annoyed me the most with this story is that it ended where it was supposed to be picking up.

And I can’t stop thinking that if Edgar Allan Poe wrote at some point a Buzzfeed article it would be as lame and boring as this story.

I give this story 1 / 5

“Instinct vs Reason – A Black Cat” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

The line which demarcates the instinct of the brute creation from the boasted reason of man, is, beyond doubt, of the most shadowy and unsatisfactory character — a boundary line far more difficult to settle than even the North-Eastern or the Oregon

Oh boy where do I start this review?

I appraicfte reading this short story but nothing more than that. I didn’t like it as much as I’ve suspected I would.

It’s well written so it need to get point for doing that.

The plot in this however could be better because it didn’t go well with me. I don’t know why.

Ive read all of the poems and short stories which Edgar Allan Poe and this one feels like Edgar Allan Poe but there is something missing but I can’t name what.

I give this book 1 / 5

“Morning On The Wissahiccon” By Edgar Allan Poe Review

This one is describing the natural beauty of Wissahickon Creek, which flows into the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Will I was reading I had the feeling that this one is sort of a commentary on the effects of man vs wild nature. Which I didn’t like.

The writing style here was pretty okay but nothing better than this one. As someone who have read every short story and poem by Edgar Allan Poe I know that Edgar Allan  Poe was able to do better than this one.

The plot here was pretty good but the whole potential wasn’t used. All I’m saying is that it could be better.

For me there also been something missing in this short story.

I give this book 1 / 5
