“Ex Oblivione” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about dreams of a presumably dying man.

Gotta say I really loved this plot, however something went wrong here and made not give it full score.

The writing style wasn’t the best here and it could have been much better than it actually was.

Somehow this short story left me disappointed for whatever reason. I was expecting more from a horse about afterlife and dreams.

I found this prose very boring but that’s just me I guess who is being very harsh on stuff I read now on days.

The ending left me with a question which was “What happened here?”. I don’t really know what happened in this prose.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Picture in the House” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about A young man takes shelter from a storm in an old house inhabited by a strange old man.

So this is the second short story by HP Lovecraft which gave me Edgar Allan Poe vibes for whatever reason. But I really don’t mind that.

The writing style here was pretty decent, but as someone who have read a few short stories by HP Lovecraft I know that he was able to do better than this.

The plot in this one was really Lovecraftian as you might know. But still for whatever reason it didn’t go well with me.

It was very short so I didn’t need to suffer throughout reading this one, which is really good.

The ending in this one, was one of the worst ending I’ve read so far. Which really speaks for itself doesn’t it?

I feel like the whole premise of this story wasn’t really fulfilled which really annoys me.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Cats of Ulthar” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about how the town of Ulthar made the decision to forbid anyone from killing cats.

For the most part this one is fun little short story which most people will enjoy.

The plot is fine here, but the whole potential wasn’t used here. And the plot gives a couple of question-marks because the narrator talks about that in the time before the law became a thing, there have been an accident or an event where the an old cotter and his wife who trapped and killed their neighbors’ cats.

The writing style here was pretty okay, it wasn’t the best but after reading a couple of short stories I can tell that the writing style could be much better than it actually was.

This short story supposes to be a horror story but to be honest it feels more like a twisted and dark fairytale than a horror story. It can be just me, but if you have read this short story let me know what was your thoughts about it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Terrible Old Man” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about Three robbers plan to break into the house of a mysterious old man to steal his gold. They soon find out that the old man is not as defenseless as they thought.

The plot of this story isn’t so unique now on days because it is about adult men planning to rob an old man. We have seen probably ever version of this plot in the movies during the last 10 years which makes this plot a little bit overused. But the fact that this short story was written back in 1920 doesn’t make it better since im dead tired of this plot. (Thanks Hollywood for destroying this plot for me).

The writing style went down the hill from the previous short story from HP Lovecraft we have talked about. It was for the most part okay but there were some parts which were a little bit at the bottom of the hill kindly said.

The characters here were surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting the characters in this short story to be so good as they were.

This story was creepy at some parts, and for the most part this story was enjoyable with very few boring moments. And to make a quick comment about these creepy moments in this short story I need to say that I truly loved these creepy moments because they sent a chill down my spine.

But to be fully honest here this short story was for me at least way too descriptive. The amount of details and other things we were given in this short story annoyed me to say at least. I hate when short stories and books have way too many details in them. Come on authors give us some free space to wonder ourself.

“Nyarlathotep” By HP Lovecraft Review

This poem is about  a bleak view of human civilization in decline. And the whole poem explores the mixed sensations of desperation and defiance in a dying society.

Well I don’t know how to write this review because I like this poem but also at the same time didn’t. And I don’t know what happening to me on this one, because whenever I finish reading something I just know if I liked it or not.

The writing style in this one was amazing, it was probably the best part about this poem. It felt like HP Lovecraft was in my head and just knew what words to use to get me involved in the story of this poem.

However the plot itself wasn’t so good. I don’t know but the plot didn’t go so well with me on this one. Of course it was good but I felt like it could be much better.

It is important to mention that this poem for whatever reason gave me a Edgar Allan Poe vibe while reading it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Statement of Randolph Carter” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about the first person testimony of the titular character, who has been found wandering through swampland in an amnesiac shock.

The whole plot of this short story was pretty good, but for me it was something missing in the plot so that’s why it didn’t get the full score in the plot category. But since you might know, I’m very picky so it isn’t anything new when I don’t give a high score to books, short stories and poems.

The writing style was for me the best part about this short story. It was amazing and it almost felt like HP Lovecraft was in your head and knew what words to use in purpose to have you involved in the story.

And the fact that this short story is sort of a horror drama got me involved even more in the short story. Horror drama is the only drama I’m into and the fact that this short story gives us that is amazing.

For the most part this short story was an enjoyable read, however it had some very boring parts and there were some plot holes for me at least.

There was some creepy moments in this one but come on, it could have been more of them to be honest. Or at least I watched too many horror movies and read too many horror books which made me immune to creepy and scary stuff.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“History of the Necronomicon” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The text tells how the Necronomicon was penned by the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred under the title Al-Azif. Alhazred died after being devoured by invisible demons in front of a terrified crowd. His work was subsequently suppressed, though survived. No original Arabic copies survive, nor any Greek translations.

Before getting into this short story I thought that I wouldn’t like it because of the theme of this short story. But after reading it, I need to say that I loved it.

The writing style is so amazing in this one, and it screams that H.P Lovecraft wrote it and I love that. The writing style really had build the atmosphere in this one because it was so good.

The plot itself here isn’t really my type what I’ve enjoyed it enough to give it 4 stars. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the plot but I still appreciate it and found it interesting.

For the most part this short story is nothing more than just a cute little short story with an eerie vibe in it.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The Very Old Folk” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

It is a recording of a dream, where the protagonist is a Roman military official in the Vascon country near Pompelo. The countryside is, every year, ravaged by terrible hill people who kidnap citizens and perform cruel rituals at a Sabbath. The narrator wishes to lead a military expedition to crush these hill folk, as a feeling of approaching evil has enveloped the countryside, due to a riot between the citizens and the hill people.

Ive heard negative things about this short story which really made my expectations ready low for this one however it was fucking good. This one is easily one of my favourite short stories from H.P Lovecraft.

The plot here was good but not amazing. Ive truly enjoyed the plot in this one. But it could have been much better than it actually was.

The writing style here was amazing. It really screamed H.P Lovecraft vibe, you could really feel the gothic vibe in this short story.

In this short story H.P Lovecraft sort of flex his knowledge about the Roman ranks and history and I didn’t mind it.

This short story is also a strange one but presented to us like a dream rather than a story of an insane man.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

In his dreams, Randolph Carter sees a majestic city, but is unable to approach it. After the third time the city appears in his dreams, his longing to reach the city reaches its peak. He prays to the gods of dream to reveal the city’s whereabouts, but then the city vanishes from his dreams altogether. Undaunted, Carter resolves to beseech the gods in person at Kadath, the mountain above which the gods of dream live.

So this one is another short story from H.P Lovecraft which involves a lots of talk about dreams. However this one is very, very good.

The plot here was amazing, it was interesting, it was eerie, it had the sinister vibe to it, it was fun and so much more. I gotta say that the plot in this one was a typical H.P Lovecraft plot because there was so much to it which only few authors could handle to do and H.P Lovecraft was one of them.

The writing style was amazing. It really screamed that H.P Lovecraft have written it. You could really see the soul to H.P Lovecraft in the writing style in this short story.

The narration of the story was amazing, it felt like Stephen King mixed with Edgar Allan Poe. And id you know me then you know that I love both of these two authors, but my favourite is definitely Stephen King.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The Music of Erich Zann” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Due to lack of funds, a student studying metaphysics abroad is forced to take up lodging in a cheap apartment building on a street named the “Rue d’Auseil”. The street is not far from his university and is bordered by a river, dark warehouses and a large wall, giving the street an appearance of being on a cliff. The student cannot see what lies on the other side of the wall, as only a single window on the top floor of his building looks over it.

This one is what I’ve always expect from H.P Lovecraft. It is super interesting, its eerie, it got that sinister vibe to it and I love it.

The plot here had some plot holes here and there but it was super fun to read and it was super interesting to read. However it had few down tripes but nothing which will ruin much this story for you.

The writing style here was amazing. The writing style here really speaks for itself and really gives you the huge H.P Lovecraft vibe.

If you never read anything from H.P Lovecraft before and you want to start the journey somewhere then ill would say that this one is one of the nest stories to start the journey with.

I give this short story 4 / 5
