“Pickman’s Model” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story revolves around a Bostonian painter named Richard Upton Pickman who creates horrifying images. His works are brilliantly executed, but so graphic that they result in his membership in the Boston Art Club being revoked and himself shunned by his fellow artists.

This short story blew my mind because it was fucking good, I didn’t really expect it to be so good as it was.

So far I gotta say that this short story might be one of my favourites stories from H.P Lovecraft.

The plot here was fucking good but still had some runs down the hill. Which really killed the mood here and the atmosphere which really made me sad.

This short story had some little bit scary moments in it which I truly enjoyed them. But if it comes to the whole story then it had an eerie vibe to it which I enjoyed and found it interesting.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The Shadow over Innsmouth” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The narrator explains how he instigated a secret investigation of the ruined town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts—a former seaport isolated from other nearby towns by vast salt marshes—by the U.S. government after fleeing it on July 16, 1927. The investigation ultimately concluded with the arrest and detention of many of the town’s residents in concentration camps as well as a submarine torpedoing Devil Reef, which the press mistakenly reported as Prohibition liquor raids.

So far I’ve read a lot of H.P Lovecraft’s short stories and I gotta say that this one is the best one to start your journey with the man.

The plot was good and had the potential to be much better than it actually was but of course yet again H.P Lovecraft didn’t use that potential. The plot had couple of down rides thought the 150 pages.

The idea for the plot was amazing but it was a little but misused because it could have been so much better if only H.P Lovecraft took the right choice of how to tell the story. Because the way he choice to tell the story didn’t quite match the plot. This is at least how I felt about it.

The writing style was not the greatest, it could have been so much better Tham it actually was.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“Ibid” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

“Ibid” is a mock biography of the Roman scholar Ibidus, whose masterpiece was Op. Cit., “wherein all the significant undercurrents of Graeco-Roman thought were crystallized once and for all.” The piece traces the skull of Ibidus, once the possession of Charlemagne, William the Conqueror and other notables, to the United States, where it travels via Salem, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island to a prairie dog hole in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This short story was a unique take on the biography category since it is a mocking biography of a Roman scholar Ibidus.

The plot itself was okay for the most part, but I was expecting something more from it. But it didn’t live up to my expectations as you might expect.

So far I need to say that this short story was the only one from H.P Lovecraft which exhibit any sense of humor. It did actually surprise me because I didn’t expect H.P Lovecraft to be into jokes.

The writing style was decent but nothing too impressive but at least it wasn’t bad like in some other short stories written by the man.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Call of Cthulhu” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story’s narrator, Francis Wayland Thurston, recounts his discovery of various notes left behind by his great uncle, George Gammell Angell, a prominent professor of Semitic languages at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, who died during the winter of 1926, suspecting eldritch goings-on after being bumped into by a “nautical-looking negro”.

The plot itself was okay for the most part but there were a lots of swings in it. There were good moments and there were bad moments. However the idea behind the plot was very good and it had the potential to be much better than it actually was. So ill give this short stir points for that.

The writing style was okay for the most part but I didn’t feel quite like H.P Lovecraft have written it. So I don’t know what he had tried to do with this one.

The atmosphere was very eerie which I loved and I give this short story points for that.

As a stand alone short story this one really dives but if he had more follow ups stories to it then it would be much better because it would bring more into it and give us more in sights.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“Old Bugs” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

With the onset of Prohibition, the Sheehan Billiard Room in Chicago became a sordid haunt for hard drinkers. A certain Old Bugs, a mature man corroded by vices but capable of showing, at long intervals, the typical sensitivity of educated people works as a kitchen cleaner.

The beginning of this short story was slow as it could get, it had 0 action and nothing interesting with it. But after couple of pages the action have rose up and it finally began to be interesting.

This short story doesn’t have any monsters chasing the main character nor it is a story which you will expect from H.P Lovecraft.

The descriptions in this short story were up and down. There were moments where the descriptions were very good but there have also been moments where the descriptions were super bad. These swings in descriptions for me at least ruined the short story.

The beginning as I’ve said before was bad and middle part was good enough and by the end it felt quite melancholy.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Transition of Juan Romero” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story involves a mine that uncovers a very deep chasm, too deep for any sounding lines to hit bottom. The night after the discovery of the abyss the narrator and one of the mine’s workers, Juan Romero, venture inside the mine, drawn against their will by a mysterious rhythmical throbbing in the ground.

I gotta be honest with you here and say that this short story had the potential to be much better than it actually was. However it wasn’t bad it was just okay for the most part.

The writing style was a little bit off in this one but it had some very good moments here and there.

The plot in this short story had so much potential that wasn’t used that it almost hurt to read it. Because it would be so much better, this plot had the mood, had the creepy atmosphere but just how it was told didn’t go so well. The idea behind the plot was good but it could have been better if H.P Lovecraft decided to add more into it and tell the story in a different way.

The atmosphere itself here, was creepy enough for me to enjoy it but it missed the eerie atmosphere which is so popular when it comes to H.P Lovecraft

I give this short story 3 / 5

“A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So another decent short story from H.P Lovecraft. For the most part it was enjoyable and fun to read bit it was far from the best short story written by H.P Lovecraft.

The best part of this short story if you ask me where when H.P Lovecraft had  poked fun at his own vintage, gothic and archaic style of writing. I personally love when authors make fun of themselves or the pop culture in their books but of course within a reason because everything can be overdone.

The plot itself in this short story was for the most part boring but of course it had some good parts here and there. Which this it needs to get points for.

I gotta say that this short story wasn’t the typical H.P Lovecraft short story nor the short story which you will expect from the man. But it was interesting to see H.P Lovecraft try to do something new for himself and not just stick the the style which made him famous.

Overall this short story felt like it was more like a parody than a serious short story.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Alchemist” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story is recounted by the protagonist, Count Antoine de C, in the first person. Hundreds of years ago, Antoine’s noble ancestor was responsible for the death of a dark wizard, Michel Mauvais. The wizard’s son, Charles le Sorcier, swore revenge on not only him but all his descendants, cursing them to die on reaching the age of 32.

This one is pretty one to read and its kind of okay to read It isn’t the best nor the worst so i’ll pass it.

This short story has a creepy castle mixed with a perfect and creepy setting and who doesn’t love these two things mixed together?

The atmosphere is very good in this one very creepy and eerie and that’s how I like the atmosphere in a book to be. However this short story wasn’t scary so don’t expect that in this short story.

The writing style was pretty good but it cold have been much better than it actually was because there were some holes in the writing and there were times where the writing style went for a walk down the hill.

The plot wasn’t the greatest I’ve read, but so far in the top 10 stories I’ve read from H.P Lovecraft.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“Hypnos” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The narrator, a sculptor, recounts meeting a mysterious man in a railway station. The moment the man opened his “immense, sunken and widely luminous eyes”, the narrator knew that the stranger would become his friend-–”the only friend of one who had never possessed a friend before”. In the eyes of the stranger he saw the knowledge of the mysteries he always sought to learn.

Here we are again with other okay short story from H.P Lovecraft.

It is important to mention that this short story was an experiential short story from H.P Lovecraft about the unreliable and hysterical narrator. This short story also reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story named “Tell Tale Heart”.

The plot itself was okay, but not much to talk about here. It could have been better but it wasn’t which is kind of sad.

The writing style was okay but sometimes it took a little but of a dive which really pissed me of because it really killed the mood in this short story.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Festival” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Yet again we are talking about another decent short story from H.P Lovecraft.

The main character seems like a cool person even thou we never learns his name, but I gotta tell you I would love to meet the main character and have a little chat with him.

The plot itself wasn’t what I’ve expected after reading the title of this short story but still it wasn’t bad nor great. It was just okay for the most part. However it had the potential to be better than it actually was,

The writing style could have been better because there were a lots of times where it took a big dive into the deep which I wasn’t the biggest fan of.

The atmosphere in this short story is eerie and sinister which I give this short story points for. Because I truly appreciate it
