“The Book” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

In the story fragment, the narrator is given an ancient book by a strange bookseller, and when he takes it home and examines it, weird and sinister events ensue.

And today as well were are talking about HP Lovecraft and one of his short stories and this time it is a story named The Book.

The writing style was pretty okay, it wasn’t super bad nor was it good.

Overall the short story felt to me like it was unfinished or like the ending was missing from the version I was reading.

I also had a feeling that this short story was rather an attempt at a short story than it actually being a short story.

I give this story 1 / 5

“The Evil Clergyman” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story begins in the attic of an ancient house. The narrator’s companion refers to the former owner of the house and the presumably violent end that befell him. He advises the narrator not to stay after dark or touch anything.

The narration style to this story was pretty good but the entire plot wasn’t. I had high hopes for this one but it didn’t live up to these hopes.

The writing style was pretty okay but it could have been much better than it actually was.

And to be fully honest with you here I didn’t care for it, nor the characters which are in this short story.

The characters here and the narrator in this short story are just so flat that it becomes insurable.

This short story wasn’t even a little bit scary which is sad because HP Lovecraft wrote this one. And he is considered to be one of the few horror masters.

“The Moon-Bog” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

In the story, the unnamed narrator describes the final fate of his good friend, Denys Barry, an Irish-American who reclaims an ancestral estate in Kilderry, a fictional village in Ireland. Barry ignores pleas from the superstitious local peasantry not to drain the nearby bog, with unfortunate supernatural consequences.

The main plot of this story was pretty good but it could have been better in couple of ways and I also didn’t vibe with it. So I just couldn’t give this short story a good rating.

The writing style was pretty good, to be honest it was better than the writing style than in the previous HP Lovecraft short story we talked about which was “The Quest of Iranon”.

To me stil story felt like something written by M.R. James, which really speaks for itself.

I also need to mention that this short isn’t so memorable which to me means that if you can remember it a year after you read it, then the story wasn’t good enough.

I give this story 1 / 5

“Facts Concerning The Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family” By HP Lovecraft Review

And today again we are talking about HP Lovecraft and one of his short stories.

Before we start this review let me just quickly mention that are couple of comments on goodreads that this short story is racist. But no that’s not true.

The writing style here was pretty decent but it could have been better, and HP Lovecraft was fully able to do better.

The plot, was pretty okay but I personally felt like there was something missing in it. But I just can’t tell what. But for the most part the premise of this story was well done, and the mystery in this story was pretty okay overall.

This story involves probably the worst way to die which of course is dead by burning alive. Which really gave me chills while reading it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Ex Oblivione” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about dreams of a presumably dying man.

Gotta say I really loved this plot, however something went wrong here and made not give it full score.

The writing style wasn’t the best here and it could have been much better than it actually was.

Somehow this short story left me disappointed for whatever reason. I was expecting more from a horse about afterlife and dreams.

I found this prose very boring but that’s just me I guess who is being very harsh on stuff I read now on days.

The ending left me with a question which was “What happened here?”. I don’t really know what happened in this prose.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Azathoth” By HP Lovecraft Review

So another not every good short story written by HP Lovecraft.

Here again I was very disappointed in this short story. When I read reviews on goodreads about this one it really seemed like a good short story but oh boy.

The writing style was pretty okay. It wasn’t bad nor good. It could be better.

The plot here was also pretty okay, but it could be much better. I feel like I say this a lot in the reviews.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Quest of Iranon” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story is about a golden-haired youth who wanders into the city of Teloth, telling tales of the great city of Aira, where he was prince. While Iranon enjoys singing and telling his tales of wonder, few appreciate it. When a disenfranchised boy named Romnod suggests leaving Teloth to go to the famed city of Oonai, Iranon takes him up on his offer.

You can say that this short story is an early version of modern day fantasy which was written in the Edward Plunkett style.

The thing which made HP Lovecraft popular in the first place, you won’t find it in this short story. This story isn’t bad nor is it good. After all this story gives us some good imitation but the characteristic horror to HP Lovecraft is gone here.

The ending was sad but it also was an ending which we deserved. Which I love when something like this happens. The ending doesn’t need to have a “happy ending” as long as the author gives us the ending which we deserved.

The writing style for the most part was okay but of course it could have been much better than it actually was.

I give this story 1 / 5

“The Terrible Old Man” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about Three robbers plan to break into the house of a mysterious old man to steal his gold. They soon find out that the old man is not as defenseless as they thought.

The plot of this story isn’t so unique now on days because it is about adult men planning to rob an old man. We have seen probably ever version of this plot in the movies during the last 10 years which makes this plot a little bit overused. But the fact that this short story was written back in 1920 doesn’t make it better since im dead tired of this plot. (Thanks Hollywood for destroying this plot for me).

The writing style went down the hill from the previous short story from HP Lovecraft we have talked about. It was for the most part okay but there were some parts which were a little bit at the bottom of the hill kindly said.

The characters here were surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting the characters in this short story to be so good as they were.

This story was creepy at some parts, and for the most part this story was enjoyable with very few boring moments. And to make a quick comment about these creepy moments in this short story I need to say that I truly loved these creepy moments because they sent a chill down my spine.

But to be fully honest here this short story was for me at least way too descriptive. The amount of details and other things we were given in this short story annoyed me to say at least. I hate when short stories and books have way too many details in them. Come on authors give us some free space to wonder ourself.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“The Cats of Ulthar” By HP Lovecraft Review

This short story is about how the town of Ulthar made the decision to forbid anyone from killing cats.

For the most part this one is fun little short story which most people will enjoy.

The plot is fine here, but the whole potential wasn’t used here. And the plot gives a couple of question-marks because the narrator talks about that in the time before the law became a thing, there have been an accident or an event where the an old cotter and his wife who trapped and killed their neighbors’ cats.

The writing style here was pretty okay, it wasn’t the best but after reading a couple of short stories I can tell that the writing style could be much better than it actually was.

This short story supposes to be a horror story but to be honest it feels more like a twisted and dark fairytale than a horror story. It can be just me, but if you have read this short story let me know what was your thoughts about it.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Nyarlathotep” By HP Lovecraft Review

This poem is about  a bleak view of human civilization in decline. And the whole poem explores the mixed sensations of desperation and defiance in a dying society.

Well I don’t know how to write this review because I like this poem but also at the same time didn’t. And I don’t know what happening to me on this one, because whenever I finish reading something I just know if I liked it or not.

The writing style in this one was amazing, it was probably the best part about this poem. It felt like HP Lovecraft was in my head and just knew what words to use to get me involved in the story of this poem.

However the plot itself wasn’t so good. I don’t know but the plot didn’t go so well with me on this one. Of course it was good but I felt like it could be much better.

It is important to mention that this poem for whatever reason gave me a Edgar Allan Poe vibe while reading it.
