“How to Steal a Dragon’s Sword” By Cressida Cowell Review

Viking Berk heir Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and his dragon, Toothless are target of dragon rebellion — filled with the meanest Razor-wings, Tonguetwisters, and Vampire Ghouldeaths. Only a King can save them, a champion with all of the King’s Lost Things. Hiccup will have to outwit a witch, fight his arch-enemy, and beat back an army of bloodthirsty dragons with just one sword.

This book is the 9th book in the “How to Train Your Dragon” series. I gotta admit that this book has restored my faith in this series, because it is still as good as in the beginning. Because this book is a masterful blend of adventure, humor, and emotional depth. But as always I will explain everything in this review. So if you are interested in hearing my thoughts about this book then keep reading, my dear reader.

The story in this book plunges us into a world on the brink of chaos. The dragons are in rebellion, and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III finds himself amidst a deadly conflict that could change the course of history. The central plot revolves around the quest to find the legendary Dragon Jewel, an artifact that holds the key to restoring peace between humans and dragons.

The depiction of the Viking world is both expansive and intricate, with new territories and challenges that add depth to the narrative. The stakes are higher than ever, and the richly imagined settings (from desolate islands to formidable fortresses) create a vivid backdrop for the unfolding drama.

Hiccup’s character shines brilliantly in this installment. His journey from an awkward boy to a courageous leader reaches new heights as he grapples with the responsibilities of leadership and the weight of destiny. The author of this book expertly portrays Hiccup’s internal struggles, showcasing his growth in wisdom and bravery.

When it comes to Toothless, Hiccup’s loyal dragon companion, plays a crucial role in the narrative. Their bond is beautifully explored, reflecting themes of loyalty, trust, and friendship. The dynamic between Hiccup and Toothless is more profound than ever, adding emotional depth to the story.

Supporting characters in this book like Fishlegs, Camicazi, and Stoick the Vast are also given moments to shine, each contributing to the richness of the narrative and the development of the overarching themes.

This book delves into themes of courage, sacrifice, and the struggle for peace. Hiccup’s quest for the Dragon Jewel symbolizes the pursuit of harmony and understanding in a world torn by conflict. The story emphasizes the importance of empathy and the courage to stand up for what is right, even when faced with overwhelming odds.

The themes which are explored in this book are different from the themes explored in previous books which made me give this book some extra points for doing. Because it seems like the author is finally exploring other topics for this series rather than sticking with the same themes in this book which have been relevant for the 8 previous books in this seires.

The rebellion of the dragons in this book serves as a metaphor for the dangers of misunderstanding and the necessity of bridging divides. The author of this book uses these elements to craft a narrative that resonates on both personal and universal levels, encouraging us as readers to reflect on the power of unity and compassion.

The writing in this book is both engaging and evocative, capturing the adventurous spirit of the series while incorporating moments of introspection and emotion. Her witty dialogue and vibrant narrative voice bring the characters to life, making each interaction memorable.

The pacing of this book is expertly managed, balancing high-stakes action with quieter, character-driven moments. The plot twists and turns with precision, ensuring that I personally remained hooked throughout the story. In a way the author of this book has the ability to blend humor with tension adds a dynamic layer to the narrative, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.

I Give This Book 5 / 5
