“Old Bugs” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

With the onset of Prohibition, the Sheehan Billiard Room in Chicago became a sordid haunt for hard drinkers. A certain Old Bugs, a mature man corroded by vices but capable of showing, at long intervals, the typical sensitivity of educated people works as a kitchen cleaner.

The beginning of this short story was slow as it could get, it had 0 action and nothing interesting with it. But after couple of pages the action have rose up and it finally began to be interesting.

This short story doesn’t have any monsters chasing the main character nor it is a story which you will expect from H.P Lovecraft.

The descriptions in this short story were up and down. There were moments where the descriptions were very good but there have also been moments where the descriptions were super bad. These swings in descriptions for me at least ruined the short story.

The beginning as I’ve said before was bad and middle part was good enough and by the end it felt quite melancholy.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Transition of Juan Romero” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story involves a mine that uncovers a very deep chasm, too deep for any sounding lines to hit bottom. The night after the discovery of the abyss the narrator and one of the mine’s workers, Juan Romero, venture inside the mine, drawn against their will by a mysterious rhythmical throbbing in the ground.

I gotta be honest with you here and say that this short story had the potential to be much better than it actually was. However it wasn’t bad it was just okay for the most part.

The writing style was a little bit off in this one but it had some very good moments here and there.

The plot in this short story had so much potential that wasn’t used that it almost hurt to read it. Because it would be so much better, this plot had the mood, had the creepy atmosphere but just how it was told didn’t go so well. The idea behind the plot was good but it could have been better if H.P Lovecraft decided to add more into it and tell the story in a different way.

The atmosphere itself here, was creepy enough for me to enjoy it but it missed the eerie atmosphere which is so popular when it comes to H.P Lovecraft

I give this short story 3 / 5

“A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So another decent short story from H.P Lovecraft. For the most part it was enjoyable and fun to read bit it was far from the best short story written by H.P Lovecraft.

The best part of this short story if you ask me where when H.P Lovecraft had  poked fun at his own vintage, gothic and archaic style of writing. I personally love when authors make fun of themselves or the pop culture in their books but of course within a reason because everything can be overdone.

The plot itself in this short story was for the most part boring but of course it had some good parts here and there. Which this it needs to get points for.

I gotta say that this short story wasn’t the typical H.P Lovecraft short story nor the short story which you will expect from the man. But it was interesting to see H.P Lovecraft try to do something new for himself and not just stick the the style which made him famous.

Overall this short story felt like it was more like a parody than a serious short story.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Alchemist” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story is recounted by the protagonist, Count Antoine de C, in the first person. Hundreds of years ago, Antoine’s noble ancestor was responsible for the death of a dark wizard, Michel Mauvais. The wizard’s son, Charles le Sorcier, swore revenge on not only him but all his descendants, cursing them to die on reaching the age of 32.

This one is pretty one to read and its kind of okay to read It isn’t the best nor the worst so i’ll pass it.

This short story has a creepy castle mixed with a perfect and creepy setting and who doesn’t love these two things mixed together?

The atmosphere is very good in this one very creepy and eerie and that’s how I like the atmosphere in a book to be. However this short story wasn’t scary so don’t expect that in this short story.

The writing style was pretty good but it cold have been much better than it actually was because there were some holes in the writing and there were times where the writing style went for a walk down the hill.

The plot wasn’t the greatest I’ve read, but so far in the top 10 stories I’ve read from H.P Lovecraft.

“Hypnos” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The narrator, a sculptor, recounts meeting a mysterious man in a railway station. The moment the man opened his “immense, sunken and widely luminous eyes”, the narrator knew that the stranger would become his friend-–”the only friend of one who had never possessed a friend before”. In the eyes of the stranger he saw the knowledge of the mysteries he always sought to learn.

Here we are again with other okay short story from H.P Lovecraft.

It is important to mention that this short story was an experiential short story from H.P Lovecraft about the unreliable and hysterical narrator. This short story also reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story named “Tell Tale Heart”.

The plot itself was okay, but not much to talk about here. It could have been better but it wasn’t which is kind of sad.

The writing style was okay but sometimes it took a little but of a dive which really pissed me of because it really killed the mood in this short story.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Festival” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Yet again we are talking about another decent short story from H.P Lovecraft.

The main character seems like a cool person even thou we never learns his name, but I gotta tell you I would love to meet the main character and have a little chat with him.

The plot itself wasn’t what I’ve expected after reading the title of this short story but still it wasn’t bad nor great. It was just okay for the most part. However it had the potential to be better than it actually was,

The writing style could have been better because there were a lots of times where it took a big dive into the deep which I wasn’t the biggest fan of.

The atmosphere in this short story is eerie and sinister which I give this short story points for. Because I truly appreciate it

“Cool Air” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

A man, newly arrived in New York, learns that a reclusive doctor lives in the apartment above his own. While suffering a heart attack, he is taken to the doctor’s door, and soon becomes friends with the bizarre and isolated man who claims he must live in a refrigerated environment for his health. But as the man spends more time with the doctor, he begins to understand the horrifying truth about his friend’s strange medical condition.

Another decent short story from H.P Lovecraft now that’s what I’ve been expecting from the man himself. It wasn’t the best as you might expect from the man, but it is still interesting, enjoyable and fun to read.

It wasn’t that scary as you might expect, but it had some creepy parts as well as it had moments which will send chills down your spine.

The plot is overall okay, but nothing much to brag about or talk about because it doesn’t have so much into it as you might have thought.

The writing style was okay for the most part but it had a lots of moneys when it had run down the hill to stay there for a while which sort of pissed me out.

“The Strange High House in the Mist” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Thomas Olney, a “philosopher” visiting the town of Kingsport, Massachusetts with his family, is intrigued by a strange house on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It is unaccountably high and old and the locals have a generations-long dread of the place which no one is known to have visited. With great difficulty, Olney climbs the crag, approaches the house, and meets the mysterious man who lives there.

Finally a pretty decent short story from none other than H.P Lovecraft. Ive been waiting for a long time to read something like this after reading so many bad short stories from the man himself.

However this short story wasn’t scary as much as you might think or expect from it. But for sure it is eerie and has some very good moments which will send chills down your spin but nothing more than this.

The plot itself is fine, but it could have been better because it had the potential to be better than it actually was. The plot has for sure a creepy setting to it which I was a fan of, but it felt like something was missing in it. Which I can really put word to it because I don’t really know what was missing there but something was for sure.

But the plot had some weak parts at least for me and at times it was kind of boring which really sucked because it could have been avoided if H.P Lovecraft decided to skip couple of things here and there in this story.

The writing style was beautiful in this one but there were couple of moments where it sort of ran down the hill for a whole before returning to the beautiful level.

“The Rats in the Walls” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story is narrated by the scion of the Delapore family, who has moved from Massachusetts to his ancestral estate in England, known as Exham Priory. On several occasions, the protagonist and his cats hear the sounds of rats scurrying behind the walls. Upon investigating further, he finds that his family maintained an underground city for centuries and that the inhabitants of the city fed on human flesh, even going so far as to raise generations of human cattle, who eventually began to de-evolve due to their sub-human living conditions.

And yet again we are talking about a 2 star short story from H.P Lovecraft.

The plot in this short story is bad, super bad however it had some good moments which I found myself enjoying but these moments were rare in this short story and it is sad. The plot in this short story had the potential to be much better than it acutely was but its too late to change it now.

The writing style in this one was bad, like super bad. And it was the worst part of this short story. The writing style didn’t feel like something written by the goat himself.

The first 5-10 pages of this short story were pointless for the rest of the short story so I don’t understand the point of these first pages because they only take extra space and extra time to read and they don’t do anything.

For the most part this short story was very drown out with some few parts in it.  And this short story was the sign that some show stories doesn’t age well because what people like and don’t like change with time.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Lurking Fear” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So this is another short story from H.P Lovecraft which involves multiple different short stories in it.

To be honest here none of them were specially good. All of them were good enough to relieve 2 stars as a whole but they wouldn’t get that if they were standing alone let me say that.

The writing style here was pretty decent and I think that the writing style was the best part of this whole short stories collection.

The plot wasn’t good enough in any of these 4 stories which this short story involve. I had hard time trying to focus on them and they didn’t get my attention because I didn’t like them so much as I wished too.

All of the 4 short stories were boring and uninteresting, and that’s why it didn’t get my attention. There were too many words in this one and too little action which really didn’t go well with me

I give this short story 2 / 5
