“Broken Frontier: Anthology – Sketchbook” By Various Review

Take a look behind the scenes of the Broken Anthology creative process with this collection of sketches, thumbnails, layouts and full black and white interiors by the artists in the book.

This comic book is an ambitious collection that aims to showcase a variety of artistic talents and storytelling styles. Unfortunately, it falls short in execution. While this comic book boasts a wide range of contributors, the lack of cohesion and depth in the storytelling detracts from the overall experience.

The concept behind this comic book is intriguing because it is bringing together diverse voices to explore themes related to boundaries and frontiers, both literal and metaphorical. However, the sketchbook format of this comic book, which focuses on preliminary sketches and incomplete narratives, has often left me wanting more substance and clarity.

One of the key challenges with this comic book is its inconsistency. With multiple contributors, the quality of both art and storytelling varies significantly from piece to piece. Some entries shine with creativity and potential, offering glimpses of compelling worlds and characters. Others, however, feel underdeveloped, with fragmented plots and unclear artistic direction. This inconsistency makes it difficult for me personally to fully engage with the anthology as a whole.

The artwork in this comic book, while being very diverse, is another mixed bag. There are certainly standout pieces that capture attention with their unique styles. these pieces hint at the potential for rich visual storytelling. However, many sketches appear rough and unfinished, which, while expected in a sketchbook, which has hinder my ability to connect with the stories being told. The lack of polish in some entries detracts from the overall impact of the anthology.

Narratively, this comic book struggles to maintain a coherent thematic focus. The idea of exploring “broken frontiers” is broad and open to interpretation, which can be a strength in theory. In practice, however, the anthology lacks a unifying thread that ties the various stories together. This absence of cohesion leads to a disjointed reading experience, where the thematic exploration feels superficial rather than deeply considered.

Despite these shortcomings, this comic book does offer moments of creativity and inspiration. Some stories present intriguing concepts and characters that could be further developed into engaging narratives. These glimpses of potential suggest that, with more refinement and focus, the anthology could evolve into a more cohesive and impactful collection.

Wells creates a narrative that balances high-stakes action with heartfelt moments, showcasing Spider-Man’s enduring appeal. The plot is well-paced, maintaining a rhythm that have kept me personally engaged while highlighting Peter’s internal struggles and triumphs.

Patrick Gleason’s artwork elevates the Spider-Man story with vibrant and kinetic illustrations. The action sequences burst with energy, and the detailed character expressions add emotional depth. Gleason’s style perfectly complements the narrative, bringing Spider-Man’s world to life in a way that is both visually stunning and true to the character’s spirit.

The Venom segment, written by Al Ewing, offers a darker, more intense storyline that delves into the complexities of the symbiote’s existence. Ewing creates a plot rich with suspense and moral ambiguity, exploring the duality of Venom’s nature. This part of the issue is gripping, with a narrative that have also kept me personally on the edge of their seats.

The artwork for the Venom segment complements its darker tone, using shadow and contrast to enhance the mood. “The Engagement Deal Vol. 1” By Tsukiko Kurebayashi & Kim Lawrence Review

“You’re just a boy-crazy little kid!” Niall had called her. Holly was hurt when the man of her dreams treated her like a child. Now, ten years later, she’s an independent woman working as a doctor. However, she still hasn’t forgotten the events of that night. Unaware or perhaps simply unconcerned about Holly’s emotional scars, Niall makes a sudden, unbelievable proposal. “The truth is, my parents are hounding me to hurry up and get married. Would you pretend to be my fiancée?”

This comic book is a romantic drama that offers a blend of intrigue and emotional tension. At the same tome this comic book introduces us as readers to a story filled with classic romance tropes, executed with charm and a touch of sophistication.

The narrative in this comic book centers around a compelling engagement arrangement between two individuals from contrasting worlds. This adaptation of Kim Lawrence’s original story captures the essence of a modern romance, focusing on themes of love, trust, and societal expectations. While the plot follows a somewhat predictable path, it still manages to engage me personally with its emotional depth and character dynamics.

The characters in this comic book are well-crafted, each with distinct personalities and motivations that drive the narrative forward. The protagonist’s journey is relatable, as they navigate the complexities of love and familial obligations. The chemistry between the lead characters is palpable, with moments of tension and tenderness that has kept me personally invested in their evolving relationship.

The writing itself in this comic book effectively conveys the internal struggles and emotions of the characters, adding layers to the seemingly straightforward storyline. The dialogue is natural and flows well, capturing the nuances of each character’s voice and enhancing the overall reading experience. However, some interactions feel rushed, leaving certain emotional beats underexplored.

The artwork is a standout feature in this comic book. Because the illustrations are elegant and expressive, bringing the characters and their world to life with a refined touch. The artist’s attention to detail is evident in the character designs and settings, which are both visually appealing and immersive.

Despite its strengths this comic book, occasionally struggles with pacing. Certain plot developments unfold too quickly, which has left me personally wishing for more gradual character development and deeper exploration of the story’s themes. This can detract from the emotional impact, as some pivotal moments feel less impactful than they could be with more buildup.

Additionally, while this comic book offers a satisfying introduction to the characters and their predicament, it leaves several questions unanswered, setting the stage for further exploration in subsequent volumes. This sense of anticipation has kept me interested, though it may also lead to some frustration for those seeking immediate resolution.

This comic book features a range of genres and styles, showcasing Fridolfs’ versatility as a storyteller. Each story brings something unique to the table, whether it’s action, humor, or heartwarming moments. One of the standout elements of this comic book is its accessibility. The stories are crafted to be easily digestible, appealing to both newcomers and seasoned comic fans. Fridolfs employs a straightforward narrative style that makes the material approachable, allowing us as readers to dive right into each tale without feeling lost.

The character development varies across the different stories in this comic book, with some offering deeper insights than others. While the short format limits the extent of character exploration, Fridolfs manages to create memorable personalities that leave an impression. The characters are often relatable, with motivations and interactions that resonate, even in a limited number of pages.

The artwork throughout this comic book is vibrant and dynamic, enhancing the storytelling with visually appealing illustrations. Each story features a distinct artistic style, reflecting the tone and genre of the narrative. This variety in visuals adds an extra layer of engagement, which have drawn me into the different worlds Fridolfs has created.

“At the End of the Day Vol. 1” By Nina Hatori & Betty Neels Review

One early morning in London, Julia rescues a cold, crying kitten. While doing so, she has a strange yet pleasant encounter with a man who was trying to do the same thing. When Julia reunites with him days later during an interview for a secretarial position, she’s rendered speechless. What are the odds that the man she met that day would be Professor van der Wagema, her prospective employer? Although he’s the same man, he treats Julia completely differently during the interview. He’s cruel and cold, to the point that Julia wonders if she only imagined him in the morning mist. During her weeklong wait for the interview results, she spends time at her parents’ home. Little does she know, she’ll reunite with him there, too!

This comic book offers a romantic narrative that, unfortunately, falls short of its potential. While the story in this comic book aims to capture the charm and emotional depth characteristic of romance novels, it struggles with pacing and character development, which has left me personally wanting more.

The narrative in this comic book follows a familiar romantic trope, focusing on the blossoming relationship between the protagonist and a seemingly unattainable partner. The creators of this comic book attempt to weave a tale of love and personal growth is evident, but the execution lacks the depth needed to fully engage me personally. The plot unfolds predictably, with few surprises or unique twists to distinguish it from other stories in the genre.

The character development is one of the areas where this comic book falters. The protagonist, while relatable in certain moments, often feels one-dimensional. Her motivations and internal struggles are not explored in enough depth to create a strong emotional connection with the reader. Similarly, the love interest comes across as an archetype rather than a fully fleshed-out character, making it difficult to invest in their relationship.

Betty Neels’ influence, known for her classic romance style, is apparent, yet the collaboration with Hatori does not fully capitalize on this potential. The dialogue, while occasionally charming, often lacks the wit and nuance needed to bring the characters to life. Interactions between characters feel stilted at times, missing opportunities to delve into meaningful exchanges that could add depth to the narrative.

The pacing of this comic book is another challenge this comic book has the face. The story moves at a slow pace, with long stretches that do little to advance the plot or deepen the characters. This can make the reading experience feel tedious, as key moments of development and tension are few and far between. A more dynamic pacing could enhance the narrative flow, making the story more engaging and impactful.

The artwork in this comic book complements the romantic tone but does little to elevate the storytelling. The illustrations are serviceable, capturing the basic expressions and settings, but they lack the detail and emotion that could enhance the narrative. More expressive and dynamic artwork might have helped convey the story’s emotional beats more effectively.

Despite its shortcomings this comic book does have moments of charm and warmth, particularly in scenes that focus on the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery. These glimpses suggest potential for growth and improvement in future volumes, should the narrative and characters be given more depth and nuance.

In terms of artwork, the Star Wars section benefits from vibrant and dynamic illustrations that bring the galactic setting to life. The action sequences are well-executed, capturing the energy and movement typical of Star Wars adventures. The artwork complements the narrative, enhancing the overall storytelling experience.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender segment, penned by Amy Chu, offers a delightful return to the world of Aang and his friends. This story captures the charm and heart of the original series, focusing on themes of friendship and self-discovery. Chu’s narrative is engaging, though it feels somewhat constrained by the short format, leaving some plot points underexplored.

Character interactions in the Avatar segment are a highlight, with familiar faces like Aang, Katara, and Sokka portrayed with warmth and authenticity. Chu captures their unique voices, maintaining the humor and camaraderie that fans cherish. The dialogue is sharp and engaging, contributing to the nostalgic appeal of the story.

The artwork in the Avatar section is colorful and expressive, effectively conveying the emotions and personalities of the beloved characters. The illustrations capture the essence of the Avatar world, providing a visually pleasing experience that complements the narrative.

While both segments are enjoyable, this comic book as a whole occasionally suffers from the limitations of the free comic format.
