“The White Ship” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

A lighthouse keeper named Basil Elton engages upon a peculiar fantasy in which a bearded man piloting a mystical white ship is found sailing upon a bridge of moonlight. Elton joins the bearded man on this ship, and together they explore a mystical chain of islands unlike anything that can be found on Earth.

Another good short story from H.P Lovecraft. This short story is very poetic and parable I would say. It was super enjoyable and super engaging. And this short story really proves why H.P Lovecraft is one of the most important authors who ever lived.

The writing style was good, not as good as it was in the previous short story from H.P Lovecraft we talked about which was “From Beyond”. But the writing style was still incredible and very good.

I gotta say that this short story was more about just description of a mystical voyage which are on the a strange ship with a strange old man. But it still was very interesting and fun to read.

Its interesting because of the fact that it’s actually just a fantasy and not a typical Lovecraftian horror which you might expect.

The plot in this short story was interesting and super fun to read. Its a nice escape from the real world on the evening after work / school when you just want to have a book in your hand in your comfy spot.

This short story is kind of long but it is still super fun to read and you will be fully able to read it in one siting.

The descriptions in this short story are amazing and beautiful which really adds some extra points to this short story.

However I personally am not the biggest fan of tales and stories of the sea, but I’ve enjoyed this one.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“Celephaïs” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Celephaïs was created in a dream by Kuranes as a child of the English landed gentry. As a man in his forties, alone and dispossessed in contemporary London, he dreams it again and then, seeking it, slowly slips away to the dream-world. Finally knights guide him through medieval England to his ancestral estate, where he spent his boyhood, and then to Celephaïs.

The writing style in this short story is very poor, which really pissed me off because I had really high expectations for this short story since there were a lots of people who were recommending this short story to me.

The characters here are again very poor. Poor in the meaning of as developed in the short story, the character to them and everything else which makes a character in a book / short story / movie / series / game.

The plot here in this short story is pretty poor, and some parts here were like super boring and I was questioning why I’m reading this short story when these parts came. And the plot didn’t really get my full attention and this usually happens when the story is really bad.

However this short story is a typical H.P Lovecraft short story, but if you read some thing written by H.P Lovecraft before reading this one you will be disappointed a little bit because it is so bad.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“Polaris” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

In the story, an unnamed narrator describes his nightly obsession with the Pole star, and his recurring dreams of a city under siege. The narrator struggles with determining whether his reality is real, or if his dream is the true reality. Critics have noted autobiographical elements in the story, and have connected it with Lovecraft’s experiences of uselessness during WW1

The atmosphere here in this one wasn’t great for me because I didn’t quit get it and it felt strange.

The write style in this one was pretty strange and it didn’t feel quit as H.P Lovecraft. And it also felt like it was written by someone who have never written anything before. It could be just be me who is being to harsh for everything I read.

The plot here is pretty basic and not to much to talk about here because there isn’t much which is happening here.

The characters here are also not much to talk about here, because they are super flat and they feels like there is nothing to tell them apart here.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Outsider” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So I’ve heard a lots of good things about this one but unfortunately it didn’t live up to the expectations I had for this short story.

The characters in this one are oh boy, not great to say at least. And it was impossible for me to connect with them which leads to a low rating.

The plot itself here was pretty good because it talks about loneliness which pretty much everyone can relate to at some level. This short story also talks about the ab-human aspect of the life. In this shirt story the Ab-human refers to to a “Gothic body” or something that is only vestigially human and possibly in the process of becoming something bad and dangerous like a boogeyman, werewolf, vampire or zombie. These two things in my opinion adds a lot to the story and makes it to one of the more unique H.P Lovecraft’s work even though it isn’t the best.

The writing style here is pretty good, however there are a lots of moments in this short story where the writing style takes a dive and runs down the hill. Which is sad because it would be a 3 star rating if there were fewer of these moments.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Conscript” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

And once again we are talking about a disappointing short story from H.P Lovecraft. And this time as well it is a short story which not a lot of people are talking about.

The writing style here again was pretty poor and far from great. But it did had some good moments here and there which I need to appreciate.

The plot itself was pretty okay but it had the potential to be better than it actually was. But this is one of these things which are too late to change now I guess.

The characters here are also very hard to connect with here which really pissed me off because I want to finally read a good short story from H.P Lovecraft.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“From Beyond” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Told from the first person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person’s pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality.

The writing style very good in this one. It really surprised me because it I didn’t expect it and I had low expectations for it.

When it comes to the plot of this short story I gotta say that I truly liked it. It was so good that it surprised me. It has something to it, it was easily to connect with it and it made you imagine the whole story in your head.

This plot almost seemed like it was perfect for a new season for “Stranger Things”, it really had the vibe of the first season of stranger things.

It was sort but still super engaging and super enjoyable. However it wasn’t scary as some of you might expect, but it had couple of moments which send chills down my spine.

And the narrator in this short story was like generic narrator from every gothic horror story but in this short story the narrator had something to him  which made him generic and also unique at the same time.

This short story is full of dread and ingenuity. Which I personally really enjoyed.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The City” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So this is another short story by H.P Lovecraft which really disappointed me. But it surprised me that not a lot of people are talking about this short story it seems like  everyone about forgotten about this one. But lets into the review shall we?

The plot itself in this short story feels like it was written by a high school student in the gothic era. It was bad but it had the gothic vibe to it which I really loved but as a whole I just can’t give it a full score.

The writing style here was poor, and there isn’t much to talk about here as you may expect.

The characters here are also very poor, and I count connect with them at all. Is you might expect the rating to be low.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Hound” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

This short story explores the idea of suicide as a response to knowledge of the world.

Once again we are gathering here to talk about one of H.P Lovecraft’s work and this time it is The Hound.

The writing style in this one was amazing which really surprised me.

The story however could have been much better than it actually was. It had the potential to be better but this potential wasn’t used. Which is sad. And I sort of had hard time connecting with the story.

And I don’t know why but the story didn’t go well with me for whatever reason. Its could have been just me but it was couple of plot holes which I’ve noticed.

I give this short story 1 / 5

“Dagon” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

This short story tells the story of Paul Marsh, a young man who discovers that the truth will not set him free instead it condemns him to a waking nightmare of unrelenting horror.

So another pretty average short story from H.P Lovecraft. I’ve been lately binge reading H.P Lovecraft stories so that’s the reason why there have been so much talk about H.P Lovecraft on this site lately. But lets go to the review shall we ?

The writing style was pretty good in this one, it really surprised me how good it was because I had low expectations for this short story.

The plot itself was pretty good, but it could have been better. There were parts where I connected with this story but I hard time connecting with the entire story which means no so high rating.

But I gotta admit that this short story is one of the darkest mythos in literature. Which I really didn’t mind because it was relatively good.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“Memory” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

This story takes place in the ancient valley of Nis, in vegetation-covered stone ruins described by Lovecraft in great detail. These crumbling blocks of monolithic stone now serve only for grey toads and snakes to nest under. Interspersed in the ruins are large trees that are home to little apes.

And again we are talking about the goat himself, of course I mean H.P Lovecraft.

This short story was amazing. One of these things which makes this short story great is that it uses many of Lovecraft’s common images and ideas. Like the recalling of the deep past mixed with the unknown things.

The writing style here was amazing, and it really proves why H.P Lovecraft is one of the most important writes who every lived. And it also shows why he has so many fans today.

The story is what you imagine a short story by H.P Lovecraft would be like. It got something to it which makes it scary and it gives you goosebumps. And the story in this one feels like a mix between Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock.

The entire short story has an eerie vibe to it and the atmosphere in this one a scary vibe to it.

This short story has amazing delightfully and haunting depiction of memories which are of the fall of civilisation.

I give this short story 5 / 5
