Italy and the United Kingdom have just signed a naval treaty and France and Russia will pay anything to know the latest British naval plans, some of which must be contained therein. While it is being copied at the Foreign Office, an audacious thief acts. The disgraced official, in whose care the original was trusted, loses his mind and then, months later, calls in Sherlock Holmes because the treaty, surprisingly, is still secret. Can the famous detective save the day?

To be fully honest here this story was a little bit weak but let me explain why I say so. 

The plot here was a little bit off and weak in my opinion. It for sure wasn’t one of the best Sherlock Holmes stories but it still bring joy and entertaining while reading it. But after reading it and thinking about this story I gotta say that it could have been better than it actually was.

The characters here are okay but when it comes to Sherlock Holmes and doctor Watson they are an amazing due and I loved they both because they have something in them which makes us relate to them.

The writing style here was okay but I think that sir Arthur Conan Doyle could have done better in this book.

Sherlock Holmes recounts to Watson the events arising after a visit from a former university acquaintance, Reginald Musgrave. Musgrave comes to see him after the disappearance of two of his domestic staff, Rachel Howells, a maid, and Richard Brunton, the longtime butler. The pair vanished after Musgrave had dismissed Brunton for secretly reading a family document, the Musgrave Ritual.

To be fully honest here this story was a little bit weak but let me explain why I say so.

“Silver Blaze” focuses on the disappearance of the famous race horse, Silver Blaze, on the eve of an important race and after the apparent murder of its trainer. The tale is distinguished by its atmospheric Dartmoor setting and late-Victorian sporting milieu. It also features some of Conan Doyle’s most effective plotting, hinging on the “curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”

When a young governess, recently unemployed and desperate for a new position, accepts a job with a couple living in a remote country home, her positive first impressions of the man and his family begin to change.

When the Countess of Morcar’s priceless blue carbuncle is stolen, a reformed thief is charged with the crime. But a strange thing happens. Trivial is what Sherlock Holmes calls it. He’s studying an old hat when Dr. Watson visits to wish him “The compliments of the season.” Holmes tells Watson about Commissionaire Peterson’s report of seeing a little knot of roughs assault a man carrying a Christmas goose home for the family. They all ran, leaving both the goose and the hat. No one could locate the man, Henry Baker, whose name was tagged to the goose so Peterson took possession.

Miss Mary Sutherland, angry and beside herself with feelings of loss, asks Sherlock Holmes to solve the sudden, mysterious disappearance of a shy and attentive man she has grown to love. He disappeared on the very day they were to be married. It’s a challenge Holmes can’t turn down.

“His Last Bow”, the title story of this collection, tells how Sherlock Holmes is brought out of retirement to help the Government fight the German threat at the approach of the First World War. The Prime Minister himself requests Holmes’s services to hunt down the remarkable German agent, Von Bork. Several of the detective’s earlier cases complete the volume, including ‘Wisteria Lodge’, ‘The Bruce-Partington Plans’, and ‘The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax’. In ‘The Dying Detective’, Dr Watson is horrified to discover Holmes at death’s door from a mysterious tropical disease as his friend lays a trap for a murderer.

I had high expectations for this one which I didn’t quite live up to.
