“The Bride of the Sea” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Gotta say that this short story was pretty average, it was okay but nothing more than that.

The writing style here was pretty basic and not much here to say more than that. It was good but sort of this didn’t feel like something Lovecraftian as you might expect.

The plot itself was okay, but I had hard time connecting with it so of course if I can’t connect with the plot then I can’t give the book / short story a good reading even if I want to.

The narrator of this short story was sort of a generic narrator which you can find in any book and short story with a narrator from 1900s.

I think that this short story had a little bit of potential to be better than it actually was.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Temple” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story is narrated as a “found manuscript” penned by Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, a lieutenant-commander in the Imperial German Navy during the days of World War I. Altberg begins by declaring that he has decided to document the events leading up to his untimely end in order to “set certain facts” before the public, aware that he will not survive to do so himself.

Another pretty average short story from no other than H.P Lovecraft.

The writing style was probably the best part of this short story, it was actually super good. It makes you imagine indoor head what you read in this short story. This short story really proves that the writing style is as important as the plot itself.

The plot itself in this short story however was pretty average. I think that H.P Lovecraft really nailed it, because I have a feeling that if someone else wrote this story it wouldn’t be as good as it really as.

And I gotta be a little bit honest here with you about the fact that this short story is a slightly unusual story for H.P Lovecraft.

And I need to give this short story extra points for being sort of a claustrophobic underwater horror short story. I’m the person who is scared of deep seas and oceans so it works very good on me.

I give this short story 3 / 5

“The Descendant” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The story begins with a narrator explaining that he is on his deathbed and feels the need to share a particular story before he dies. He tells of a quiet and slightly mad older man who lives in the Gray’s Inn with his pet cat. The mad is haggard and haunted, looking older than his years and terrified of church bells. A young man named Williams (the narrator) moves into to the Inn and tries to befriend the old man and get him to share his knowledge. It is revealed that the man is Lord Northam of England.

So this was another pretty average short story from H.P Lovecraft. I had high expectations for this short story but it did disappoint me a little bit.

This short story also felt like it wasn’t complete and that the some parts of the short story are missing.

The writing style was pretty okay and it probably the writing style it was the best part of this short story.

The plot was okay but it had potential to be better. It somehow felt poor and that something was off with it. It would be much better if this short story was a novel instead of a short story.

Some parts of this short story had some creepy parts in it, which this short story needs to get points for.

I was missing from this short story more details and descriptions. This short story would be so much better of it had more details and descriptions.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The White Ship” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

A lighthouse keeper named Basil Elton engages upon a peculiar fantasy in which a bearded man piloting a mystical white ship is found sailing upon a bridge of moonlight. Elton joins the bearded man on this ship, and together they explore a mystical chain of islands unlike anything that can be found on Earth.

Another good short story from H.P Lovecraft. This short story is very poetic and parable I would say. It was super enjoyable and super engaging. And this short story really proves why H.P Lovecraft is one of the most important authors who ever lived.

The writing style was good, not as good as it was in the previous short story from H.P Lovecraft we talked about which was “From Beyond”. But the writing style was still incredible and very good.

I gotta say that this short story was more about just description of a mystical voyage which are on the a strange ship with a strange old man. But it still was very interesting and fun to read.

Its interesting because of the fact that it’s actually just a fantasy and not a typical Lovecraftian horror which you might expect.

The plot in this short story was interesting and super fun to read. Its a nice escape from the real world on the evening after work / school when you just want to have a book in your hand in your comfy spot.

This short story is kind of long but it is still super fun to read and you will be fully able to read it in one siting.

The descriptions in this short story are amazing and beautiful which really adds some extra points to this short story.

However I personally am not the biggest fan of tales and stories of the sea, but I’ve enjoyed this one.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“The Nameless City” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

The unnamed narrator of the story goes into the middle of the Arabian Peninsula to seek out and enter a lost city. After hearing a clanging seemingly coming from deep inside the earth, the narrator inspects mysterious carvings and ruins until nightfall. The next day, the narrator discovers a cliff riddled with low-ceilinged buildings, unfit for human use.

The writing style was pretty okay, but there were parts of it which really were poor. And these parts really ruined more the short story.

The plot itself wasn’t great. It was okay at its best. However I liked the fact that this short story was set in the Cthulhu Mythos world.

And this short story wasn’t another short story which was based on one of H.P Lovecraft’s dream.

I also need to give this short story couple of points for sometimes having a creepy vibe in it.

However the characters in this short story, I had really hard time connecting with them. And as some of you might know that if I can’t connect with the characters in a book or the plot itself then the results in a very low rating.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“Celephaïs” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Celephaïs was created in a dream by Kuranes as a child of the English landed gentry. As a man in his forties, alone and dispossessed in contemporary London, he dreams it again and then, seeking it, slowly slips away to the dream-world. Finally knights guide him through medieval England to his ancestral estate, where he spent his boyhood, and then to Celephaïs.

The writing style in this short story is very poor, which really pissed me off because I had really high expectations for this short story since there were a lots of people who were recommending this short story to me.

The characters here are again very poor. Poor in the meaning of as developed in the short story, the character to them and everything else which makes a character in a book / short story / movie / series / game.

The plot here in this short story is pretty poor, and some parts here were like super boring and I was questioning why I’m reading this short story when these parts came. And the plot didn’t really get my full attention and this usually happens when the story is really bad.

However this short story is a typical H.P Lovecraft short story, but if you read some thing written by H.P Lovecraft before reading this one you will be disappointed a little bit because it is so bad.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Tree” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

On a mountain which was a chosen haunt for the Greek God Pan is an olive grove, and a fearful, human-like olive tree within it.

The plot itself had actually surprised me on how goof it actually have been. Because I’ve read some shirt stories by H.P Lovecraft before reading this one and I gotta say that they did disappoint me very much when it came to the plot but this one didn’t because it was so good.

The plot takes the turn to the classical Greek setting. I’m a huge fan of mythologies and as we all know the greek mythology is probably one of the biggest and richest mythologies which exists.

The writing style here was bad, I felt like the short story was written by someone who have never written a short story before.  But this can be explained by the fact that short story is sort of a step outside of comfort zone for H.P Lovecraft. Because this one is a little but different than most of his other works.

The action itself in this short story doesn’t exist because there aren’t much happening in this short story. Which really disappointed me here.

When it comes to the characters in this short story I gotta say that here again they were very poor and I couldn’t connect with them. Which really ruined the short story for me.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“The Doom That Came to Sarnath” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

So another disappointing short story by H.P Lovecraft. Which really makes me sad because I want to like all of H.P Lovecraft’s works but as you may see this website it doesn’t work.

The writing style in this one I gotta say is probably the most enjoyable part in this short story. The writing style here is sort of a mythic/fantasy style which I really enjoyed.

I gotta give this short story extra points for being connected with Dream Cycle, which is something I truly enjoy when it comes to H.P Lovecraft.

The plot itself here wasn’t really much to talk about here. Because it wasn’t entertaining, it wasn’t enjoyable. It was just bad.

The characters here again are bad, and I again couldn’t connect with them. So the rating is low as you may expect here.

I give this short story 2 / 5

“From Beyond” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

Told from the first person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person’s pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality.

The writing style very good in this one. It really surprised me because it I didn’t expect it and I had low expectations for it.

When it comes to the plot of this short story I gotta say that I truly liked it. It was so good that it surprised me. It has something to it, it was easily to connect with it and it made you imagine the whole story in your head.

This plot almost seemed like it was perfect for a new season for “Stranger Things”, it really had the vibe of the first season of stranger things.

It was sort but still super engaging and super enjoyable. However it wasn’t scary as some of you might expect, but it had couple of moments which send chills down my spine.

And the narrator in this short story was like generic narrator from every gothic horror story but in this short story the narrator had something to him  which made him generic and also unique at the same time.

This short story is full of dread and ingenuity. Which I personally really enjoyed.

I give this short story 4 / 5

“Polaris” By H.P. Lovecraft Review

In the story, an unnamed narrator describes his nightly obsession with the Pole star, and his recurring dreams of a city under siege. The narrator struggles with determining whether his reality is real, or if his dream is the true reality. Critics have noted autobiographical elements in the story, and have connected it with Lovecraft’s experiences of uselessness during WW1

The atmosphere here in this one wasn’t great for me because I didn’t quit get it and it felt strange.

The write style in this one was pretty strange and it didn’t feel quit as H.P Lovecraft. And it also felt like it was written by someone who have never written anything before. It could be just be me who is being to harsh for everything I read.

The plot here is pretty basic and not to much to talk about here because there isn’t much which is happening here.

The characters here are also not much to talk about here, because they are super flat and they feels like there is nothing to tell them apart here.

I give this short story 2 / 5
